Why Is Lycopene Anti-aging?

Nov 20, 2019

Aging is inevitable. There are many reasons for aging, such as age, stress, and so on. Many modern people are stressful, and too much pressure can easily cause excessive free radicals in their bodies. Free radicals are often an important cause of aging. Today we will introduce a substance that how tomato lycopene inhibit aging.

What is the lycopene exactly?

The lycopene is rich in tomatoes. Because it prevents various diseases, anti-cancer, anti-aging, and prevents free radicals. It has played a role in many aspects such as damage to tissue cells and genes. Lycopene has been identified as a Class A nutrient by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Food Additives Committee (JECFA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), and has been used as a food additive with both nutrition and coloration in more than 50 countries and regions. It is widely used in the fields of food, medicine and cosmetics.

Why does free radicals cause aging? And why is lycopene anti-aging?

As we all know, iron will rust in the air, which is caused by oxidation. If it is not treated, it will soon be corroded, and the metabolism of the human body is just like oxidation. So it is said that people are rusting every day. This rust is called "free radicals" in medicine. The main hazards of free radicals are causing cellular oxidation, which acts with deoxyribonucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and fats, and harms the human body.

With the rapid development of science, industry and civilization, the environment is increasingly polluted, and the changes in diet to lifestyle, the body will produce a lot of free radicals ,which causes various diseases and damage to the body. It can be said that free radicals are the main reason to cause aging. But  lycopene has a unique chemical structure, which is relatively stable by releasing an electron to free radicals, quenching and neutralizing it, releasing energy, and repairing damaged cells to fight free radicals and delaying aging.

In addition to effectively inhibit, scavenge free radicals and resist radiation, lycopene can also prevent external radiation and ultraviolet rays from damaging the skin. The sun, ultraviolet rays and radiation from the outside world will have a greater impact on the skin to accelerate the aging of the skin and wrinkles and stains will follow. Studies have shown that when ultraviolet light is applied to the skin, the lycopene will destroy at first.

And the lycopene in the skin irradiated with ultraviolet rays is reduced by 31%-46% compared with the unirradiated skin pulp, and the β-carotene content is almost unchanged, indicating Lycopene has a strong effect of reducing tissue oxidative damage. Lycopene effectively forms a barrier on the surface of the skin to protect the skin from damage to delay aging.
