What is the pharmacological effect of carnosic acid?

(1) Antibacterial effect: Studies have shown that carnosic acid has varying degrees of inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Hansenula yeast, it can be used as a food preservative.

(2) Antioxidant effect: It has a very good free radical removal and antioxidant effect. Its DPPH, ABTS free radical removal and iron reduction antioxidant capacity are stronger than VE, slightly weaker than the synthetic antioxidant TBHQ; which is fat-soluble, which can effectively inhibit the formation of peroxides and the decomposition of polyene fatty acids, thus prolonging the shelf life of fats. In addition, the study found that carnosic can effectively remove oxygen free radicals in mouse liver cells, reduce the production of lipid peroxides, and thus stabilize the cell membrane; it can also inhibit the oxidation of LDL, which can effectively prevent atherosclerosis.

(3) Other effects:

It is found that carnosic acid has an inhibitory proliferating effect on HL-60 cells ,it is expected to become a new drug for the treatment of hematologic malignancies, which is used to treat cardiovascular disease and fight cancer. Kaloustian et al. introduced that rosemary extracts such as it has a certain therapeutic effect on heart disease and respiratory diseases, which have antibacterial effects, it can also inhibit HIV infection. Ninomiya et al. reported that carnosic acid and other rosemary extracts can not only control the body weight by effectively regulating the absorption of fat, thereby achieving the goal of weight loss, but also can treat inflammation, treat sore throat, treat indigestion, and prevent old age.
