The main function of ALDH is to catalyze aldehydes into acids. It can metabolize acetaldehyde into non-toxic acetic acid, decompose it into carbon dioxide and water and excrete it out of the body. That is, it converts harmful substances into harmless substances.
The level of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase is different in different human bodies.

Function
An antidote for reactive oxygen species in living organisms. ALDH can catalyze the rapid dehydrogenation of toxic aldehydes such as acetaldehyde and oxidize them to carboxylic acids. It can also reduce lipid peroxidation reactions.
ALDH2 is involved in the metabolism of ethanol and can promote the conversion of intermediate products acetaldehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE).
