Kanna is officially known as Sceletium tortuosum: a member of the Aizoaceae family. The genus is part of the subfamily of Mesembryanthemoideae. Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent plant commonly found in South Africa. It is also known as kanna, channa, kougoed (kauwgoed or “kougoed”), which literally means, “chew(able) things” or “something to chew”. Traditionally, it was used as an energy booster that could enhance one’s mood without causing the hyper-activity or inability to focus associated with some recent commercial “energy booster” drinks.
