Salicylic acid powder is a phenolic acid and beta hydroxy acid derived from willow bark. The structure of salicylic acid makes it oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate the oily lipid layer of the skin.
In ancient times, healers discovered that soaking willow bark in hot water could relieve people's headaches, toothaches, and fevers.
For the concentration of salicylic acid used, the concentration specified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is 0.5-2%. The upper limit of salicylic acid is 2% set by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). The concentration of salicylic acid added to general skin care products is limited to between 0.2% and 1.5%.
In fact, salicylic acid belongs to the same class of drugs as aspirin (another salicylate), but the two substances are used differently.
Aspirin's anti-inflammatory effect comes from the salicylic acid that is formed after it is broken down in the body.
