Salvia Miltiorrhiza Extract

The dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. is a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in clinical practice. The of Salvia Miltiorrhiza Extract has the effects of promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, relieving pain, and eliminating carbuncle. The active ingredients of Salvia miltiorrhiza extract include water-soluble components and fat-soluble components. The water-soluble components are mainly phenolic acids, including rosmarinic acid, lithospermic acid, and salvianolic acid B.
The fat-soluble components are mainly tanshinones, including tanshinone I and tanshinone ⅡA.

The Chinese Pharmacopoeia stipulates that the content of tanshinone Ⅱ-A is used as an indicator for the quality control of Salvia miltiorrhiza medicinal materials.
Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) combined with mass weight coefficient method was used to characterize the six indicator components of rosmarinic acid, lithospermic acid, salvianolic acid B, salvianolic acid A, cryptotanshinone and tanshinone ⅡA in Salvia miltiorrhiza extract.

The content determination results of Salvia miltiorrhiza medicinal materials from different origins showed that the contents of tanshinone Ⅱ-A and cryptotanshinone were quite different.

Salvia miltiorrhiza extract has an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus.
Low concentration of Salvia miltiorrhiza extract has a good promoting effect on collagen proliferation, so it can be used in skin-rejuvenating and anti-wrinkle cosmetics.
Antioxidant properties. Salvia miltiorrhiza extract has a similar effect to SOD and has an elimination effect on superoxide free radicals.
Salvianolic acid B has anti-inflammatory, vasodilating, angiogenic and cardioprotective effects.
Tanshinone I and Tanshinone ⅡA have anti-ischemic arrhythmia, anti-hypoxia, and protection of damaged myocardial cells.

The main preparations with water-soluble Salvia Miltiorrhiza Extract as the main ingredients are Danshen injection, oral solution, granules, aerosols, powder injections, etc.
The main preparations with fat-soluble active ingredients as the main ingredients are pills, capsules, tablets, etc.
Danshen extracts have poor solubility and permeability. When designing the dosage form, it is possible to consider adding an appropriate amount of alcohol to increase solubility and adjust the pH value.
