Serotonin

Serotonin, also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a key neurotransmitter produced by the gut and brain. Serotonin is found primarily in the digestive system (90%), platelets, and the central nervous system.
It has effects on the nervous system, digestive system, and even regulates sleep as a precursor to melatonin. This neurotransmitter is involved in a variety of physiological and psychological functions, including digestive processes and mood regulation.

Excessive mental and physical stress can reduce serotonin levels. Serotonin has also been linked to suppressing pain. Low serotonin production increases pain tolerance, which can lead to chronic pain.
This subatance can balance dopamine and norepinephrine. Excessive secretion of norepinephrine can inhibit the function of serotonin.

Serotonin

1. Serotonin regulates mood.

The most typical ones are SSRIs antidepressants ("selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors"). These drugs prevent neurons from reabsorbing and breaking down serotonin, thereby increasing the levels of available 5-ht in the brain.

2. Studies have found that 5-ht levels are associated with intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome.
Research demonstrates that 5-ht is involved in intestinal motility. Damien Keating, professor of physiology at the Flinders Institute of Health and Medical Research in Australia, said: "5 ht in the gut plays many roles, but its main function is to regulate intestinal contraction and peristalsis."
