Scientists from China agricultural university have found that Proanthocyanidins (PACs) in seabuckthorn seeds can prevent the damage of light to human retinas, and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis effects.
Previous studies shows that sea-buckthorn can lower blood sugar and prevent cardiovascular diseases. The finding has already published in the journal nutrition that suggest proanthocyanidi pacs supplements may be used to prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other diseases caused by oxidative damage from sunlight.
Researchers believe that seabuckthorn extract can prevent retinal damage caused by harmful light through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis mechanisms.In addition, small molecular metabolites derived from PACs in the gut circulate in the blood and accumulate in the retina.The effect of PACs may be achieved through these small molecular metabolites.Future studies will further analyze which PAC metabolites have the highest activity in the retina.
